We should all be able to feel comfortable in our homes, without pinching our pockets to a point where comfort becomes unaffordable.
Much like our bodies, which require fitness and health maintenance and checks, our homes need maintenance and checks to see how they are coping with changes over time, to improve on current state and increase resilience for the future.
As a result of climate change, Adelaide is experiencing more extreme weather events including longer, hotter and more frequent heatwaves with less annual rainfall and more intense storm events. We have an opportunity now to reduce our carbon emissions and prevent such events from getting even worse in the coming years.
We are collating a series of resources, tips and offerings to support our communities, regardless of their situation, to navigate how to:
keep homes cool in extreme heat, and warm in winter, whilst keeping costs down;
adapt existing homes to suit a changing climate – refurbish, renovate, and seasonal preparation;
be smart about energy and water use to reduce costs;
utilise garden space and choice of outdoor materials;
design for sustainability;
live lightly with low impact on the environment and better outcomes for your health and wellbeing; and
connect with neighbours, landlords and public spaces to achieve broader, stronger climate ready outcomes.
Resilient East is working collaboratively to make our public realm, spaces, services, planning and staff more prepared for a changing climate. Behind the scenes we are advocating for changes to the state planning system, and other various policies and procedures to encourage more sustainability, adaptability and comfortability in all future homes, exceeding minimum standards through the National Construction Code.
